Seminar in relation to FREE SOL LEWITT by SUPERFLEX Friday 14 May 2010, 10.15 am – 04.30 pm atVan Abbemuseum, Eindhoven.
What are the differences between intellectual copyrights and physical ownership? What are the possibilities and difficulties brought to bear by copyright and creative commons licenses? What does it mean for a museum to ‘own’ an artwork? What kinds of models for artists’ contracts already exist or could be proposed?
Questions like these will be the focus of the English-spoken seminar Who Owns the Artwork?, organised by the Van Abbemuseum on Friday 14 May.

In this seminar participants examine and discuss issues relating to authorship, copyright, and the ownership of artworks arising from the project FREE SOL LEWITT by the Danish artist collective SUPERFLEX. In this project, which is part of the exhibition In-between Minimalisms, SUPERFLEX tests propositions made by Minimalist and Conceptual artists during the sixties and seventies. The collective exposes the tension between the distribution and exchange of information and the restrictions placed on this by copyright law and the economic system that it protects. During the seminar, professionals from the art world and the field of copyright law will address – in the widest sense – what is owned and by whom once the artwork has been transferred. Participation is free, registration via the website is required.
