Hunga Tonga by SUPERFLEX, premiering on the 27th of August.
SUPERFLEX’s film Hunga Tonga is being screened for the first time as part of the project Cinema Galleggiante, Unknown Waters, which focuses on social and environmental uncertainty. The program was conceived by Microclima in collaboration with Ocean Space/TBA21-Academy, Pentagram Stiftung and Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana - Pinault Collection.
The filmwork takes you on a journey to the South Pacific where out a volcanic eruption the island of Hunga Tonga came to be. Stepping into the film, you metamorph into an extremophile, an organism with the ability to live under the most unmeasurable conditions, which effectively makes them a bank of life. Strong enough to outlive humanity, yet weak enough to be crushed by civilisation.
In another time and chapter, the cinematic metamorphosis will turn towards the evolution of extremophiles. Transforming into humans, they come onto the newly born island. Transforming nature into civilization by melting the Earth and mining its Oceans. But once again, humans long for the sea, which somewhere in time was their home.
After the departure of humans, the island gains consciousness. With memories of extremophiles and civilization, Hunga Tonga resembles the Danish explorer Tavi. He escaped the harshness of modern human conditions, and merged into one with the island and the sea. The island erupts again, proposing that all life is circular and time is redundant.
Hunga Tonga is the outcome of SUPERFLEX’s expedition to Hunga Tonga aboard the good ship Dardanella in 2018 as part of the research project, Deep Sea Minding. Commissioned by TBA21-Academy, under their recurrent programme The Current. Deep Sea Minding merges artistic and scientific research to surface relevant data from the depths and propose a material future to serve the needs and desires of both humans and marine creatures.
