Number Of Visitors is a collaboration between Jens Haaning and SUPERFLEX. It consists of a large digital counter which was put up on the facades of a number of participating art institutions. Connected to the ticket office, the counter continuously reports the number of visitors. The installation thereby becomes an illustration of most cultural institutions’ conditions and criteria for success – the more visitors, the more opportunities for economic support. At the same time, it examines the values and expectations of potential visitors to the museum.
Number Of Visitors was originally a contribution to the traveling exhibition Populism, 2005. The show took place in four locations simultaneously, and the piece was therefore exhibited in four languages: Norwegian, German, Latvian, and English.
